The Chicago Legal Clinic, Inc. is a not-for-profit law office.  Founded in 1981 by two law school classmates, Most Rev. Thomas John Paprocki and Edward Grossman, to provide low-cost legal services, the Clinic now serves almost 25,000 clients each year and has served more than 425,000 clients over the past 35 years.  This record led to the Clinic being chosen as one of the top 20 not-for-profits in the metropolitan area by CHICAGO magazine in its November, 2015 issue.  (You can visit the Clinic's website by clicking here: www.clclaw.org.)

THE BLANK SLATE PHILOSOPHY - THE RIGHT ROADMAP

Many individuals feel like there is nothing that can be done about their criminal history. Indeed, some attorneys might tell individuals that there is nothing that can be done. This is especially common in the internet age, as a simple google search for someone's name can reveal their criminal history. This advice is simply not true. We believe that no matter how serious your criminal record, there is something you can do today to begin addressing it. That does not mean you will always be able to solve a criminal records challenge today. But you can always begin working today so that at the appropriate time, you can go into court (or another appropriate forum) to have your criminal record dealt with. There is always a roadmap that leads somewhere if you're willing to take the necessary steps.

WHAT WE OFFER

The first task of Blank Slate is to provide a roadmap for individuals who contact us. Putting together a roadmap requires understanding the particular goals of the individual. Some people mistakenly think that getting someone expungement or sealing will solve all their criminal records problems, but this is rarely the case. Indeed, some attorneys mistakenly think someone needs expungement or sealing when that relief will actually not help them at all. We work with the individual to provide them a roadmap that gets them to their goals. Where we are able to offer legal services, we generally charge attorney fees on a sliding scale based on income. If we are not able to offer a service, we still provide referrals to other attorneys, and we always try to provide as much information as we can about proceeding on your own.
